The American Avalanche Association (A3) is proud to announce several scholarship and grant opportunities for the 2023-24 Season.

A3 strongly believes in supporting our members’ research and education endeavors. Our grant programs aim to help share accurate information on snow and avalanches, facilitate technical transfer between research scientists and field practitioners, promote advancement in knowledge of snow and avalanche phenomena, and support the development of current and future generations of snow and avalanche professionals.

A3 Board of Directors Scholarship (2 Awards)

One scholarship will be awarded to a student completing their Professional Level 1 Course and one scholarship will be awarded to a student completing their Professional Level 2 course. Both scholarships are $1,500.

David Pettigrew Memorial Scholarship (1 Award)

This $2,000 scholarship is intended to support A3 members from the Pacific Northwest (Oregon or Washington) who are taking their Professional Level 1 or Professional Level 2 Avalanche Course. This is an annual scholarship given each winter in memory of David Pettigrew who grew up on Mercer Island, WA.

BCA & A3 Women’s Specific Scholarship (3 Awards)

Once again we are proud to partner with Backcountry Access to support female-identifying avalanche workers. $1,500 scholarships will be offered to three women taking their Professional Level 1 or Professional Level 2 Avalanche Courses.

Wyssen Pro Training Scholarship (2 Awards)

Committed to supporting growth and education in the snow and avalanche community, Wyssen Scholarships will be awarded to individuals seeking additional pro-level avalanche education. Each scholarship will include tuition reimbursement, up to a maximum of $1,500, to be applied towards professional training during the 2023/2024 winter season. One scholarship will be reserved for underrepresented individuals within the avalanche industry.

A3 Research Grants (multiple awards)

A3 awards Research Grants to members conducting research on snow and avalanches. Both graduate students and field practitioners are encouraged to apply. Preference is given to proposals whose results will both benefit avalanche field practitioners and will extend our understanding of snow and avalanche phenomena. Proposals should embody the theme of the International Snow Science Workshop (ISSW): “A merging of theory and practice.”
